ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is described an internal combustion engine having a plurality of main suction paths each of which opens at one end into a combustion chamber provided with a piston capable of performing a suction stroke and at the other end with a carburetor. The ends of the main suction paths opening into the combustion chamber are provided with valves to control the opening and closing thereof. There is also included a plurality of sub-suction paths each of which communicates at one end with the combustion chamber and at their other ends with the carburetor. The sub-suction paths open into the combustion chamber to direct incoming suction gases in a generally circumferential direction so as to generate a swirl of suction gas in the combustion chamber during the suction stroke. This facilitates rapid burn of the fuel-air mixture supplied from the carburetor.
