An engine where first combustion where the amount of the EGR gas in the combustion chamber is larger than the amount of EGR where the amount of production of soot peaks and almost no soot is produced and a second combustion where the amount of EGR gas in the combustion chamber (5) is smaller than the amount of EGR gas where the amount of production of soot peaks are selectively switched between. When switching between the first combustion and second combustion, the injection timing is delayed until after top dead center of the compression stroke.

L'invention concerne un moteur à combustion interne dans lequel on effectue sélectivement un premier type de combustion caractérisé par un volume de recirculation des gaz de carter dans la chambre de combustion (5) supérieur au volume de recirculation de ces gaz auquel le taux de production de suie est au maximum, pour une faible production de suie, et un second type de combustion caractérisé par un volume de recirculation des gaz de carter dans la chambre de combustion (5) inférieur au volume de recirculation du premier type de combustion correspondant au taux de production de suie maximum. Au moment de la transition entre le premier type et le second type de combustion, on diffère l'injection jusqu'à ce que l'extrémité supérieure de la compression soit atteinte.
