The present invention relates to an unthrottled internal combustion engine of segregating, spark ignited, form, i.e. in which the bulk of the fuel does not begin to mix with the bulk of the air until near the end of the compression stroke, shortly before spark ignition. The invention utilises a second cylinder (14) in communication with the main cylinder (12), fuel being delivered to vaporise within the second cylinder. Attached to the second cylinder (14) is a cavity (520) containing the spark ignition means (52), into which cavity is delivered a controlled quantity of fuel which mixes with air entering into the cavity during the compression stroke of the engine to provide a spark plug with a substantially stoichiometric fuel/air mixture at the moment of ignition, irrespective of the output of the engine.

L'invention concerne un moteur à combustion interne non étranglé de type à ségrégation, à allumage commandé, c'est-à-dire un moteur dans lequel l'essentiel du carburant commence seulement à se mélanger avec l'essentiel de l'air versa fin de la course de compression, peu de temps avant l'allumage commandé. Aux fins de l'invention, on utilise un second cylindre (14), en communication avec le cylindre principal (12), et le carburant est distribué en vue d'une vaporisation dans le second cylindre. Une cavité (520), rattachée au second cylindre (14), contient le système d'allumage (52) : cette cavité reçoit une quantité contrôlée de carburant, qui se mélange avec l'air pénétrant dans la cavité durant la course de compression, de manière à fournir à la bougie un mélange sensiblement stoechiométrique carburant/air au moment de l'allumage, indépendamment de la puissance de sortie du moteur.
