INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A two-stroke cycle engine is provided with valve- less exhaust and inlet ports in a cylinder wall. Exhaust gases drive a turbine-driven pump which supplies pressurized fresh air directly to the inlet ports. An electrically driven pump supplies the fresh air for starting the engine. A positive displacement pump forces a charge of a rich fuel-air mixture from a carburetor into a cavity in the pis- ton, through aligned valveless ports in the side of the pis- ton and cylinder when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke. The cavity communicates with the combustion chamber through an opening in the end of the piston. During the compression stroke of the piston the fresh air in the com- bustion chamber and the fuel charge in the cavity are com- pressed. As the piston nears the end of its compression stroke, a spark plug, projecting downwardly from the top of the cylinder, enters the cavity and generates high turbu- lence between the air and fuel and then the spark plug ignites the fuel in the cavity. The carburetor body is completely enclosed by an air filter to isolate any fuel leakage from ambient atmosphere.
