Abstract of the Disclosure An engine system including an internal combustion engine, a catalytic converter for the oxidation of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide within the exhaust line, and an exhaust gas recirculation circuit, which can either be supplemented or replaced by an augmented valve overlap, for diluting an air-fuel mixture fed to the engine with such an amount of the exhaust gas that the weight ratio of the total incombustible components of air and exhaust gas in the diluted mixture to fuel is 13.5-22.5, wherein each combustion chamber of the engine is equipped with either one or two spark plugs positioned to rapidly complete the combustion of the diluted mixture - 1 -
