Abstract of the Disclosure Exhaust gases, which are slightly cooler than normal due to NOx suppressing ignition of the charge containing a large amount of recirculated gas by dual spark plugs, are exhausted via a large diameter ex- haust valve to reduce the time for which they exceed the speed of sound and transfer heat to the cylinder head to maintain a high CO and HC oxidizing temperature. The exhaust valve is diametrically opposed to the inlet valve and has a cross sectional area of 19 to 24% of the cylinder bore. - 1 -
