An internal combustion engine of the opposed piston type valved by the passage of the pistons beyond inlet and outlet ports at opposite ends of the cylinders. The motion transmitting mechanisms for the opposed pistons are operable to move the opposed pistons within each cylinder through a successive three cycle repeating movement which includes (1) an operative power cycle, (2) a gas exchange cycle, and (3) an operative compression cycle. A pump assembly is associated with each piston operable to cause a fresh charge of gas to be displaced by the pump assemblies associated with the opposed pistons of each cylinder during an operative cycle of the associated pistons therein and confined to move directly into the open inlet port of one other cylinder generally simultaneously with the gas exchange cycle of the opposed pistons associated therewith so as to thereby effect the exchange of the combusted gases therein with a fresh charge under relatively low pressure conditions during a time period which is generally equal to the time of the operative cycle.

L'invention concerne un moteur thermique du type à pistons opposés, le passage desdits pistons opposés au-delà des lumières d'admission et de refoulement, au niveau des extrémités opposées des cylindres, tenant lieu de soupape. Les mécanismes de transmission de déplacement des pistons opposés fonctionnent de façon à déplacer ces pistons dans chaque cylindre, par l'intermédiaire d'un mouvement se répétant successivement selon un cycle à trois temps comprenant (1) un cycle moteur, (2) un cycle d'échange gazeux, et (3) un cycle de compression. Un ensemble pompe est associé à chaque piston fonctionnel, de façon à ce que les ensembles pompe associés aux pistons opposés de chaque cylindre déplacent une charge nouvelle de gaz, pendant un cycle fonctionnel desdits pistons, et confiné de façon à se déplacer directement dans la lumière d'admission ouverte d'un autre cylindre généralement simultanément avec le cycle d'échange gazeux de pistons opposés. En conséquence, le remplacement des gaz brûlés par une nouvelle charge dans des conditions de pression relativement basses, se fait pendant un laps de temps généralement égal à la durée du cycle opérationnel.
