In an internal combustion engine an ignition device (30) is disposed within the combustion chamber (13) in close proximity to a fuel injection nozzle (20). The ignition device (30) comprises a sleeve (34) that provides a shielded space (33) around a hot surface igniter (32). The sleeve (34) restricts flow between the shielded space (33) and the combustion chamber (13). The nozzle (20) comprises a fuel injection port that is oriented to direct at least one fuel spray (22) onto the sleeve surface (34). The sleeve (34) comprises an intake opening through which air and fuel enter the shielded space to form a combustible mixture therein. The hot surface igniter (32) comprises a tip located close to the centerline of the intake opening (36). The combustible mixture is ignited within the shielded space (33) and a combustion flame is propelled through a discharge opening and into contact with fuel sprays emerging from the fuel injection nozzle (20). Methods of operating such an engine are also disclosed.

Selon l'invention, dans un moteur à combustion interne, un dispositif d'allumage (30) est disposé à l'intérieur de la chambre de combustion (13) à proximité d'une buse d'injection (20) de combustible. Le dispositif d'allumage (30) comprend un manchon (34) qui permet d'obtenir un espace protégé (33) autour d'un dispositif d'allumage à surface chaude (32). Le manchon (34) limite l'écoulement entre l'espace protégé (33) et la chambre de combustion (13). La buse (20) comprend un orifice d'injection de combustible orienté de manière à diriger au moins un jet (22) de combustible sur la surface du manchon (34). Ledit manchon (34) comprend une ouverture d'admission par laquelle de l'air et le combustible entrent dans l'espace protégé afin que soit formé un mélange combustible dans ce dernier. Ledit dispositif d'allumage à surface chaude (32) comprend un embout situé à proximité de la ligne centrale de l'ouverture d'admission (36). Le mélange combustible est allumé à l'intérieur dudit espace protégé (33) et une flamme de combustion est propulsée dans une ouverture d'évacuation et mise en contact avec des jets de combustible sortant de la buse d'injection (20) de combustible. L'invention concerne également des procédés permettant de mettre en oeuvre ledit moteur.
