ABSTRACT An internal combustion two stroke engine having an inlet port and an exhaust port in a cylinder that is opened and closed in a timed relation by the movement of a piston in the cylinder. The exhaust port communicating with an exhaust passage that is tuned to provide a pressure pattern in the exhaust passage that will create at the exhaust port a predetermined pressure pattern while the exhaust port is open. Coolant being supplied to the exhaust passage At engine speeds below the tuned speed, and regulated over a range of engine speeds to maintain said pressure pattern in the exhaust passage over that range of engine speeds.
