An internal fault indicator for an electrical device is triggered by a sudden increase in pressure as occurs when an insulation failure creates an electric arc. The heat released in the arc is transferred onto the surrounding volume causing localized overheating, vaporization and decomposition of the insulating material. The resulting pressure surge moves a diaphragm. The movement of the diaphragm releases a spring driven plunger from a barrel which extends through the housing of the electrical device. Prior to activation the plunger is held in an "armed" position by a retaining pin. Upon triggering, the plunger is pushed by the spring until it protrudes from the housing to provide a visual signal of the internal fault. A pressure relief valve may be integrated with the internal fault indicator.

L'invention concerne un indicateur de défauts internes pour dispositif électrique, qui se déclenche lors d'une augmentation soudaine de pression se produisant par exemple lorsqu'un défaut d'isolement produit un arc électrique. La chaleur libérée dans l'arc est transférée au volume environnant, entraînant une surchauffe locale, une vaporisation et une décomposition de la matière isolante. La saute de pression résultante déplace un diaphragme. Ce déplacement du diaphragme libère un poussoir à ressort d'un cylindre qui s'étend à travers le corps du dispositif électrique. Avant activation, le poussoir est maintenu dans une position <= armée >= parune goupille de retenue. Lors du déclenchement, le poussoir est poussé par le ressort de manière à dépasser du corps, afin de fournir un signal visuel du défaut interne. Une soupape de sécurité peut être intégrée à l'indicateur de défauts internes.
