A computer-implemented information processing and storage system for use in creating multimedia language archives is disclosed. The system permits the concurrent creation of discrete dictionaries for each different language or dialect for which users wish to create a dictionary. Preferably, the system is implemented in conjunction with a multiuser computer network such as the Internet. The system includes a hierarchy of user types with associated access rights, configured to facilitate the management of the creation of dictionaries. The system includes means for creating and using digitized versions of characters unique to the written form of a particular language. The system includes an on-screen mouse-operable character array customizable to contain the characters of the written form of a particular language, for entering such characters into on- screen fields for the purpose of creating dictionary entries, searching a dictionary etc.
