A system and method for providing access to a user of vehicle information over a telecommunications network for facilitating a purchase of a vehicle from a vehicle dealer. The system and method comprise a database adapted for storing a plurality of vehicle information obtained from a plurality of vehicle dealer databases, the vehicle information including vehicle characteristics of vehicles available for purchase by the user. Further, a network interface is used for receiving at least one search request parameter from the user from the network and for sending over the network in a response message response data selected from the plurality of vehicle information matching the at least one search parameter. Further, an information module is used for coordinating the processing of a down payment from the user for a selected vehicle chosen from one or more vehicles defined in the response data, such that the down payment represents a portion of the purchase price of the selected vehicle. As well, the information module confirms the selected vehicle is available for purchase before accepting a submission of the down payment. A system and method comprise a receipt module adapted for receiving financial data associated with a dealership activity and having an in-progress status, and for subsequently receiving update information representing a cancellation of the in--progress status of the dealership activity. A storage is used with an account data structure adapted for storing the financial data, such that the account data structure is associated with a trio of accounts in the general ledger, such that pairs of the trio of accounts are related through double entry bookkeeping. A processing module is adapted for updating the received financial data in the account data structure as representing a financial value of the in-progress activity, such that the updating is done in response to the receipt of the financial data, such that the financial value represents a debit entry for application to the first account of the trio of accounts and represents a credit entry for application to the second account of the trio of accounts, the credit and debit entries having the financial value. The processing module is further adapted for updating the financial value in the account data structure in response to receipt of the cancellation of the in-progress status, such that the updating is for revising the credit entry of said second account to a debit and for adding a credit entry to the third account of the trio of accounts, the revised credit entry and the added credit entry having the financial value. Subsequently, the entries stored in the account data structure are used for updating the financial information corresponding to at least two of the trio of accounts in the general ledger, when requested.
