There is described a method for managing files in a computer system, the method comprising the steps of establishing an association between a type of file system operation, a file, and an interested entity, wherein the step of establishing an association includes storing a rule that identifies the type of file system operation and the interested entity, detecting when the type of file system operation is performed on the file and in response to detecting that the type of file system operation is performed on the file, sending a message to the interested entity.
