A page to be delivered to a user device is stored as page components. Based on characteristics of the user device, a page profile, an ad-banner profile and a thumbnail profile are selected. The page components are rendered based on the selected profiles. A source file representing media such as video, photographs or graphics, is uploaded and stored. During a pre-transcoding process, the source file is converted to a predetermined number of different formats. When the source file is requested, the best file format for the requesting device is determined. If the best file format is one of the pre-transcoded formats, a pre-transcoded file is provided, if not, then the source file is transcoded to generate an on-demand transcoded file in the best file format and provided. A media sharing system accommodates passively registered users, who receive information from the system but do not provide content media to the system, and actively registered users, who provide content to the system and then share it with others. The system collects and stores information about a user as the information is needed to accomplish a function. A media sharing system is able to deliver media content using a file format appropriate to the delivery device and using a delivery method appropriate to the delivery device. A user is able to subscribe to a file or channel by sending a mobile message or through a website. The subscription message can use hierarchical mobile keywords.
