A method and system for interworking between cellular networks (120) and wireless local area networks (WLANs) (110) are disclosed. At least one cellular network (120), at least one WLAN (110) and an EP network (140) are deployed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) (102) first establishes a connection to a WLAN (110) and a tunnel between an access point (AP) (132a, 132b) and a packet data gateway (PDG) (129) is established. The PDG (129) further establishes a tunnel to an IP network (140). The WTRU (102) then invokes a service which is delivered through the WLAN (110). As signal quality from the AP (132a, 132b) degrades below a predetermined threshold, a handover from the WLAN (110) to the cellular network (120) is performed.
L'invention porte sur un procédé et un système qui permettent l'interfonctionnement de réseaux cellulaires et de réseaux locaux sans fil ("wireless local area networks" ou WLAN). Selon l'invention, au moins un réseau cellulaire, au moins un réseau local WLAN et au moins un réseau IP sont déployés. Une unité émetteur-récepteur sans fil ("wireless transmit/receive unit" ou WTRU) établit d'abord une connexion avec un réseau local, et un tunnel est établi entre un point d'accès ("access point" ou AP) et une passerelle de données par paquets ("packet data gateway" ou PDG). La passerelle PDG établit ensuite un tunnel vers un réseau IP. L'unité WTRU appelle alors un service qui est distribué via le réseau local WLAN. Lorsque la qualité de signal en provenance du point d'accès AP se dégrade jusqu'à descendre sous un seuil minimal prédéterminé, un transfert est effectué du réseau local WLAN au réseau cellulaire. Une nouvelle connexion avec le réseau cellulaire peut être établie avant ou après la rupture de la connexion en cours avec le réseau local WLAN, ou bien les deux connexions peuvent être poursuivies de manière simultanée.
