Disposable intra-arterial auger and dotter instruments (20) for use in patients in clearing pathways at obstructed or nearly obstructed arterial sites are disclosed. A number of auger tips (400, 402, 470, 490, 600, 700) used on the instruments are disclosed along with a method for releasibly affixing auger tips to the instruments. In addition, a dotter tip (520, 550, 560) is disclosed for use in procedures where it is desired to open a pathway without excising material from the obstructed site. A combined auger and dotter tip (750) is disclosed for a procedure in which material displacement followed by excising of material from within an artery is accomplished without removal of the combined auger and dotter tip until the procedure is complete.
