In an intraoperative lymph node assay for micrometastases, a surgeon identifies a sentinel lymph node during surgery according to known methods. Sentinel nodes are removed and prepared for the extraction of nucleic acid. Nucleic acid (e.g., RNA) is then rapidly extracted from the sentinel nodes. Markers indicative of micrometastases, if present, are then amplified and detected.
