ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a drip chamber assembly for use in an intravenous system. The drip chamber is formed by upper and lower members and at least a portion of the upper member is substantially transparent. A spike is carried by the upper member and has an inlet communicating with the drip chamber. The lower member is formed of a readily deformable material and has an outlet flow passage communicating with the drip chamber. A ball is disposed in the drip chamber which is capable of floating in the liquid in the container when liquid is in the drip chamber. A valve seat surrounds the outlet flow passage and is engaged by the ball to provide a substantially liquid-tight seal. The lower member has a sufficient length above the ball when seated to permit it to be repeatedly squeezed to permit liquid to flow from the containers and to enter the drip chamber through the inlet flow passage to begin filling the drip chamber to provide liquid in the drip chamber so that the ball can float in the liquid above the valve seat and to permit liquid to flow through the outlet flow passage so that it can be supplied to a pump. The ball moves into engagement with the valve seat as soon as there is no longer any liquid in the drip chamber.
