Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to moisture-resistant particles that intumesce in large volume when exposed to heat. The particles comprise a core particle that comprises a hydrated silicate glass and a protective moisture-resistant coating surrounding the coro particle. The protective coating includes an ingredient that is ionized in the presence of water to provide metal cation capable of reacting the silicate ion of the core particle to form a reaction product that is less water-soluble than the silicate glass of the particle thereby limiting action of water on the core particle. The particles are useful in fire-retardant asphalt roofing materials.
