ABSTRACT An inverter circuit is provided in which two semiconductor switching elements are arranged in series between the positive and negative pole of a d.c. source. An alternating current can be derived between the two semiconductor switching elements. The two semiconductor switching elements are operated with a pulse width-modulated operating signal, it being possible for the scanning ratio to vary this signal in time to produce a current at the inverter outlet that correspondingly varies with time. Each semiconductor switching element requires a certain switching off period to be changed from a conductive into the non-conductive condition after the arrival of a command. The switching off period increases the risk of short circuits between the two poles of the d.c. source. For compensation purposes, ignition retarders could be employed. However, these change the predetermined scanning ratio so that the outlet voltage no longer corresponds to the predetermined desired voltage. According to the invention, an outlet voltage is obtained that fairly accurately corresponds to the desired voltage without the danger of short circuits by merely operating one of the two semiconductor switching elements whilst the other one remains blocked.
