The inverter device provides a power-supply section connected to an AC source and an inverter section for supplying power to an electrical load through an oscillating circuit. Two capacitors, a filter and a smoothing capacitor are arranged between a rectifier bridge and a half-bridge arrangement of controlled switching means. The power-supply section has an inductor with a value such that the power-supply section exhibits a predominantly inductive behaviour towards the inverter section. The inductor is connected in series with the rectifier bridge and connected upstream of said half-bridge arrangement. The inverter device is used for the power supply of an electrical load, in particular of a discharge lamp.
