ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for ion bombardment brazing. There is a vacuum vessel having a cathode for supporting a workpiece with a joint to be brazed and an anode. Filler metal is located near the joint for spreading thereinto as in vacuum brazing. The process involves exposing the workpiece to ion bombardment when the cathode is in glow discharge. The workpiece is thereby heated and its surface cleaned. Further heating results in melting of the filler metal and spreading thereof into the joint. In addition to combining a cleaning step with the brazing step, it has been found that the process has the advantage of not requiring the relatively low pressures required in vacuum brazing and can provide a shorter work cycle.
