ABSTRACT In electrostatic imaging utilizing a MIDAX printer ("silent electric discharge"), print quality is improved by supplying a gas under pressure to the electric discharge region defined by a solid dielectric member with driver and control electrodes on opposite surfaces of the dielectric, with an edge surface of the control electrode disposed opposite the driver electrode to define the discharge region at the junction of the edge surface and the solid dielectric member. "White death", "black death", and "red death" of the ion cartridge may effectively be put off. Nitrogen, or a mixture of nitrogen with a noble gas or the like, is supplied to the discharge region. The gas may be supplied to the volume between the control electrode control fingers and the screen electrode of the ion cartridge, or may be supplied through a conventional cartridge mounting rail to the first part of the volume between the imaging drum and ion cartridge in the direction of rotation of the imaging drum.
