Method and apparatus are provided for electrochemically generating an acid or base eluent in an aqueous solution and for simultaneously suppressing conductivity of the eluent in an ion exchange bet (30) after chromatographic separation in an ion chromatography system. The suppressor and eluent generator includes a flow-through suppressor bed (30) of ion-exchange resin, having an inlet (28) and an outlet section (34). An electrode chamber (14) adjacent the suppressor bed inlet section (28) includes a first electrode (17). A barrier (40) separates the suppressor bed (30) from the electrode chamber (14) and prevents significant liquid flow but permits transport of ions only of the same charge as said suppressor bed resin exchangeable ions. A second electrode (32) is in electrical communication with said suppressor outlet section (34). The sample flows through a chromatographic column (26) and then through the suppressor bed (30) to the detector (36). Acid or base generated in the chamber (14) flows to the separator bed (30) and serves as the eluent for chromatographic separation.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de générer électrochimiquement un éluant acide ou basique dans une solution aqueuse, et de supprimer dans le même temps la conductivité de l'éluant dans un lit (30) échangeur d'ions après séparation par chromatographie dans un système de chromatographie à échange d'ions. Le suppresseur et le générateur d'éluant comprennent un lit (30) suppresseur à écoulement traversant de résine échangeuse d'ions, présentant une entrée (28) et une sortie (34). Une chambre (14) à électrodes adjacente à l'entrée (28) du lit suppresseur comprend une première électrode (17). Une barrière (40), qui sépare le lit (30) suppresseur de la chambre (14) à électrodes, empêche l'écoulement important de liquide mais permet le transport d'ions uniquement de même charge que les ions échangeables de la résine du lit suppresseur. Une seconde électrode (320) est en communication électrique avec la sortie (34) du suppresseur. L'échantillon s'écoule à travers une colonne chromatographique (26) puis à travers le lit (30) suppresseur, avant d'atteindre le détecteur (36).
