An ion detector 1' for a mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising one or more microchannel plates 3a, 3b and an anode a arranged to receive electrons emitted from the one or more microchannel plates 3a, 3b. The anode a preferably has a smaller diameter than the microchannel plates 3a, 3b and is preferably arranged at a distance of at least 15 mm from the microchannel plates 3a, 3b. One or more focusing lenses 8, 9 may be provided intermediate the microchannel plates 3a, 3b and the anode 4. The anode 4 preferably comprises two portions separated by an electrically insulated layer.
