ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In an ion exchange membrane electrolytic cell which comprises an anode, a cathode, an anode compartment and a cathode compartment partitioned by an ion exchange membrane; an improvement in which a gas and liquid permeable porous non-electrode layer is bonded to at least one sur- face of said ion exchange membrane and said porous non-elec- trode layer is formed by coating electically non-conductive or conductive particles on the surface of a support to form a thin layer, transferring said thin layer onto the surface of said membrane and bonding said thin layer to said membrane by the application of heat and pressure.
