It is claimed a ion-exchange membrane fuel cell comprising elementary cells, each including two bipolar plates, a membrane, two electrodes in intimate contact with the membrane, two conductive current collectors and two gaskets. The bipolar plates are cooled along the periphery only by means of a cooling medium which flows through side windows in the gaskets. The material of the bipolar plates preferably have high thermal conductivity.

L'invention a trait à une cellule électrochimique à membrane échangeuse d'ions qui est composée de cellules élémentaires, chacune incluant deux plaques bipolaires, une membrane, deux électrodes en contact intime avec la membrane, deux collecteurs conducteurs de courant et deux garnitures. Les plaques bipolaires sont refroidies le long de la périphérie seulement par un liquide de refroidissement qui s'écoule par les fenêtres latérales aménagées dans la garniture. Le matériau des plaques bipolaires doit de préférence avoir une très bonne conductivité thermique.
