ABSTRACT There is provided a column for use in an ion exchange process which prevents, or minimises, the fouling of ion exchange resin beds used therein with unwanted particulate material. The column comprises an inlet for fluid to be treated, an outlet for treated fluid, a section for ion exchange resin, and a section for inert, particulate filter material with the latter being located between the section for ion exchange resin and the inlet for fluid to be treated such that the section for inert, particulate filter material is closer to said inlet than any section for ion exchange resin.
