ION-NITRIDING APPARATUS Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a retort type apparatus for ion-nitriding treatment having a plurality of vacuum reacting furnaces. Each furnace is so designed that by the combined use of a glow discharge and a heating element (installed between an outer wall and an inner shielding wall of each furnace) workpieces are heated and nitrided at high efficiency with stable discharge, uniform temperature dis- tribution and in a short time. The plural furnaces use a common D.C. power source which is switched between the furnaces for alternately generating a glow discharge in each furnace. The heating elements can be individually energised or can also have a common A.C. power source that is switched to alternate between them. The result is a minimisation of equipment for a maximisation of output.
