The receptor comprises one or more quaternary 2,2'-bipyridyl moieties and is represented by the formula R1-Y-R2 wherein Y is represented by structure (I) in which R1, R2, R3, R4 and q have meanings as given in the description. The compounds are of use in applications requiring anion detection or removal.
