The invention provides compounds represented by formula (1), wherein Y is - (CH2)2[O(CH2)2]n- in which n is an integer from 1 to 6; Z is -N = N-Ar in which Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; Q is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; each R independently is hydrogen or a substituent free of acidic protons; and X is R or Z. The compounds are ion-sensitive dyes suitable for use in optical ion sensors.
