An ion source for a mass spectrometer operating at a low pressure has an atmospheric pressure sample ioniser which provides a sample flow containing desired sample ions. These ions are usually entrained with undesired gas and droplets. An interface chamber is held by a vacuum pump at a pressure between atmospheric and the operating pressure of the mass spectrometer. Sample ions with entrained gas are collected through an entrance orifice forming a stream of gas into the interface chamber. Sample ions exit the interface chamber through an exit orifice to the mass spectrometer. The interface chamber disrupts the stream of gas entering the interface chamber to provide a dead region having no net gas flow direction and the exit orifice is located in this dead region. The exit orifice should have no line of sight path to the entrance orifice or should be at least 30° off the flow axis of the stream entering the interface chamber through the entrance orifice. A flow disrupting pin is located in the interface chamber to disrupt the flow of the stream of gas entering through the entrance orifice.
L'invention concerne une source d'ions pour un spectromètre de masse fonctionnant à basse pression. Cette source comprend un ionisateur d'échantillon à la pression atmosphérique, qui permet d'obtenir un courant d'échantillonnage renfermant les ions d'échantillonnage souhaités. Ces ions sont généralement entraînés au moyen de gouttelettes et de gaz inopportuns. Une pompe à vide permet de maintenir une chambre intermédiaire à une pression située entre la pression atmosphérique et la pression d'utilisation dudit spectromètre de masse. Lesdits ions d'échantillonnage et le gaz d'entraînement sont recueillis par un orifice d'entrée, formant ainsi un courant gazeux dans ladite chambre intermédiaire. Ces ions d'échantillonnage sortent de cette chambre intermédiaire par un orifice de sortie, avant de s'orienter vers ledit spectromètre de masse. La chambre intermédiaire disloque le courant gazeux qui pénètre dans ladite chambre intermédiaire afin de former une zone morte sans direction précise d'écoulement pour ledit courant gazeux, l'orifice de sortie étant situé dans cette zone morte. Cet orifice de sortie devrait être dépourvu de trajet rectiligne vers l'orifice d'entrée, ou devrait se situer au moins 30 DEG en-deça de l'axe d'écoulement du courant qui pénètre dans la chambre intermédiaire par l'orifice d'entrée. Un pointeau destiné à disloquer l'écoulement est placée dans ladite chambre intermédiaire, afin de disloquer l'écoulement de courant gazeux qui pénètre par ledit orifice d'entrée.
