An ion source for a mass spectrome-ter includes an atmospheric pressure sample ioniser (20), arranged to generate ionised sam-ple droplets for ingress into an ion block (50). The block (50) has an entrance orifice cone (70) in communication with an inlet channel (60), and an outlet channel (80) which has a first end that intersects the inlet channel (60) at 90° thereto. The other end of the outlet channel (80) opens into an evacuation chamber (90) which is pumped via a rotary vacuum pump (110). The reduced pressure within the channels of the ion block (50) draws sample droplets therethrough. An exit orifice defined by an exit orifice cone (130) is formed in the outlet channel (80) and sample ions pass through into a mass analyser region (180). The right-angle bend between the inlet and outlet channels introduces turbu-lence and promotes desolvation. Streaming of droplets from the entrance cone (70) to the exit cone (130) is also prevented.

L'invention porte sur une source d'ions pour spectromètre de masse comportant un ionisateur d'échantillons (20) à pression atmosphérique produisant des gouttelettes ionisées d'échantillon pénétrant dans un bloc d'ions (50) présentant un orifice conique (70) communiquant avec un canal d'entrée (60), et un canal de sortie (80) dont la première extrémité coupe le canal d'entrée (60) sous 90 DEG . L'autre extrémité du canal (80) de sortie s'ouvre dans une chambre d'évacuation (90) mise en dépression par une pompe à vide rotative (110). La dépression régnant dans les canaux du bloc d'ions (50) y attire les gouttes d'échantillon. Un orifice de sortie conique (130) placé dans le canal de sortie (80) permet de faire passer lesdites gouttes dans la zone d'analyse (180). Le coude à angle droit formé par les canaux d'entrée et de sortie provoque des turbulences et favorise la désolvation, tout en empêchant la migration des gouttelettes du cône d'entrée (70) vers le cône de sortie (130).
