Disclosed are ionene polymers having antimicrobial activity. "Ionene polymers" as used in this invention are cationic polymers in which a substantial proportion of the atoms providing the positive charge are quaternized nitrogens located in the main polymeric chain or backbone of the polymer rather than in pendant groups. Also disclosed are antimicrobial compositions comprising ionene polymers and methods for treating microbial infections in mammals comprising the step of administering to a mammal, a therapeutically effective amount of at least one antimicrobial composition of the invention. Also disclosed are antimicrobial compositions comprising at least one ionene polymer and methods for preventing, inhibiting or eliminating the growth, dissemination, and/or the accumulation of microorganisms on a susceptible surface (including, but not limited to, the formation of biofilms on a susceptible surface) comprising the step of contacting suchsurface with a composition of the invention.

L'invention concerne des polymères d'ionène possédant un activité antimicrobienne. Les <= polymères d'ionène >= utilisés dans cetteinvention sont des polymères cationiques dans lesquels une proportion importante des atomes produisant la charge positive sont des azotes quaternisés situés dans la chaîne polymère principale ou le squelette du polymère plutôt que dans des groupes pendants. L'invention concerne également des compositions antimicrobiennes contenant des polymères d'ionène et des procédés destinés au traitement d'infections microbiennes chez des mammifères, ces procédés consistant à administrer à un mammifère, une quantité efficace sur le plan thérapeutique d'au moins une composition antimicrobienne. L'invention concerne enfin des compositions antimicrobiennes renfermant au moins un polymère d'ionène et des procédés de prévention, d'inhibition ou d'élimination de la croissance, de la diffusion et/ou de l'accumulation de micro-organismes sur une surface sensible (notamment, entre autres, la formation de films biologiques sur une surface sensible) consistant à mettre en contact une telle surface avec une composition de l'invention.
