IONIC COAGULATION IN BEATER ADDITION OF BINDER LATICES IN PAPERMAKING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Paper-like sheets of fibers of cellulose, ceramic materials, acrylic, polyester, nylon and other synthetic textile materials, and leather, cotton, wool, flax and other naturally occurring textile materials having a surface which is essentially neutral to anionic in nature are made by the wet-laid method employing beater addition of binder latices with an ionic coagulation system. Such system employs the stepwise addition to the beater of at least three essential polymeric additions in the following order: (1) a polycationic hydrophilic, water-soluble or water- dispersible quaternary salt of a polymeric material con- taining polymer-bound halogen or amino quaternizing groups such as a quaternized polyepichlorohydrin or a quaternized polymer of an aminoalkanol ester of an acrylic acid; (2) a binder latex; and (3) a polyanionic hydrophilic, water- soluble polymer of an acrylic acid or a salt thereof. The resulting papermaking process enjoys materially reduced criticality of beater times, reduced sensitivity to furnish pH, reduced white water losses, reduced total energy require- ments and produces paper of materially increased dry tensile strength which is free of salt-type coagulant residues. - 1 -
