A method of dissolving in an ionic liquid a metal in an initial oxidation state below its maximum oxidation state, characterised in that the ionic liquid reacts with the metal and oxidises it to a higher oxidation state. The initial metal may be in the form of a compound thereof and may be irradiated nuclear fuel comprising UO2 and/or PuO2 as well as fission products. The ionic liquid typically is nitrate-based, for example a pyridinium or substituted imidazolium nitrate, and contains a Bronstead or Franklin acid to increase the oxidising power of the nitrate. Suitable acids are HNO3, H2SO4 and [NO+]. Imidazolium nitrates and certain pyridinium nitrates form one aspect of the invention.
Procédé de dissolution dans un fluide ionisé d'un métal à l'état d'oxydation initiale sous son seuil maximum d'oxydation, et caractérisé en ce que le fluide ionisé réagit avec le métal qu'il porte à son niveau d'oxydation maximum. Ledit métal initial peut se présenter sous la forme d'un composé et constituer un combustible nucléaire irradié comprenant de l'UO¿2? et/ou du PuO¿2?, de même que des produits de fission. Le fluide ionisé est généralement constitué de nitrate, tel la pyridine ou un nitrate d'imidazole et contient un acide de Bronsted ou de Franklin permettant d'augmenter la capacité oxydante du nitrate. Les acides appropriés sont HNO¿3?, H¿2?SO¿4? et [NO?+¿]. Des nitrates d'imidazole et certains nitrates de pyridine constituent l'un des aspects de l'invention.
