This invention is a catheter-based device for enhancing the local delivery of drugs, pharmaceuticals, plasmids, genes, and other agents into the wall tissues of tubular compartments of the living body. One catheter device (16) provides an electrical driving force that can increase the rate of migration of drugs, other therapeutic agents out of a polymer matrix into body tissues, and cells using iontophoresis only. Another device (16) uses iontophoresis only, electroporation only, or combined iontophoresis and electroporation. In the latter device (16), the two procedures may be applied sequentially in any order without removing or repositioning the catheter.

L'invention concerne des dispositifs à base de cathéter, pour améliorer la libération locale de médicaments, de produits pharmaceutiques, de plasmides, de gènes et d'autres agents dans les tissus des parois de compartiments tubulaires de l'organisme vivant. Un dispositif à cathéter (16) produit une force de poussée électrique augmentant la vitesse de migration des médicaments ou d'autres agents thérapeutiques d'une matrice polymère, aux tissus et aux cellules du corps, seulement par iontophorèse. Dans un autre dispositif (16), l'iontophorèse, l'électroporation ou l'iontophorèse et l'électroporation sont utilisées seules ou combinées. Dans ledit dispositif (16), les deux procédures peuvent être appliquées séquentiellement dans n'importe quel ordre, sans qu'il faille enlever ou repositionner le cathéter.
