ABSTRACT A process for synthesizing iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II), or Prussian blue which comprises the electrolysis of a solution of an iron(III) ion-containing solution and a hexacyanoferrate(III) ion-containing solution wherein the Prussian blue is deposited as a film on the cathode selected from conductive or semi-conductive materials or a substance with a conductive or semi-conductive material on its surface. Materials with such films on them are useful as electrochromic display elements and may also be incorporated into secondary batteries.
