The invention relates to method of setting up a connection between a first terminal and a second terminal over an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) link providing one or more bearer channels that allow a user-selected protocol. The terminals support a plurality of possible software protocols for use on said bearer channels. In order to facilitate making adoption to new types of ISDN protocols on an existing system, the method includes separating the protocol software into a generic module (13) containing generic ISDN encoding/decoding protocols and into protocol specific modules (14-17) containing specific types of ISDN encoding/decoding protocols. The invention also relates to an Application Resource System for setting up the above described connection.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'établir une communication entre un premier terminal et un deuxième terminal par un lien Réseau Numérique d'Intégration de Services (RNIS) fournissant au moins une voie porteuse qui accepte un protocole choisi par l'utilisateur. Les terminaux supportent une pluralité d'éventuels protocoles logiciel destinés à l'utilisation sur des voies porteuses. Afin de faciliter l'adoption de nouveaux types de protocoles RNIS sur un système existant, le procédé comprend la séparation du logiciel protocole en un module générique (13) contenant des protocoles codage/décodage RNIS génériques et en modules spécifiques protocole (14-17) contenant des types spécifiques de protocoles codage/décodage RNIS. L'invention concerne un système de ressources d'application permettant d'établir la communication susmentionnée.
