The invention is a method of making a cellulose based polymeric material arid the products of the invention. A cellulosic substrate is impregnated with an essentially uncatalyzed polyfunctional isocyanate and pressed at elevated temperature and pressure. The substrate may be a chemical or thermomechanical pulp or paper while the isocyanate is preferably diphenylmethane diisocyanate or its oligomers. Pressing conditions are preferably in the range of about 150°-245 °C at pressures in the range of about 2700-8300 kPa for times less than 2 minutes. Moisture content of the cellulosic substrate is not highly critical and may be as high as 7 % without adverse effects. The product is especially useful as overlays and for forming strong, water resistant laminates which can be molded in either flat or three dimensional forms.

Méthode servant à fabriquer un matériau polymère à base de cellulose et les produits de la présente invention. Un substrat cellulosique est imprégné d'un isocyanate polyfonctionnel essentiellement non catalysé et comprimé à des températures et des pressions élevées. Le substrat peut être une pâte chimique ou thermomécanique ou du papier, tandis que l'isocyanate est de préférence du diisocyanate de diphénylméthane ou ses oligomères. Les conditions de compression sont de préférence comprises entre environ 150° et 245 °C avec des pressions appliquées allant d'environ 2700 à environ 8300 kPa pendant une durée inférieure à 2 minutes. La teneur en humidité du substrat cellulosique ne joue pas un rôle décisif et peut aller jusqu'à 7 % sans avoir d'effets négatifs. Le produit est particulièrement utile comme revêtement et permet de former des stratifiés solides qui résistent à l'eau et qui peuvent être moulés en formes plates ou tridimentionnelles.
