ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process for preparing isoindole derivatives of the general formula Image (I) , wherein R represents an alkyl group and R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy or trifluoromethyl group, which process comprises heating a malonic acid ester of the general formula Image (II) , wherein R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl or aroyl group and R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the significance given earlier in this claim. in the presence of a suitable imidazole. The isoindoles derivatives of formula I are key intermediates for the manufacture of compounds having anoretic activity.
