ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compound having the formula: Image (I) Wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, an alkanoyl group, an aralkyl group, an alkylsulfonyl group or a arylsulfonyl group, and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a protecting group for a hydroxyl group, or a salt thereof. Useful as an intermediate in the preparation of cephalosporin derivatives (antibacterial agents) having a 5,6-dialkanoyl-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl group such as 5,6-dihydroxy-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl or 5,6- diacetoxy-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl, at the 3-position of the cephen nucleus.
