Disclosed is an isolated DNA encoding a human small conductance calcium activated potassium channel (hKCa3/KCNN3) and the protein encoded thereby. Also disclosed is evidence that alterations in the hKCa3 gene may enhance susceptibility to schizophrenia and/or bipolar disease.
