2071486 9106673 PCTABS00005 A mutation defining a gene for the N.alpha.-acetyltransferase of yeast has been identified and cloned. Mutations in this gene have been constructed and used to produce cells which are substantially incapable of catalyzing N.alpha.-acetylation of protein. Such cells are valuable tools for determining the amino acid sequence of uncharacterized proteins. Such cells are also valuable tools for expressing a recombinant protein lacking an acetyl group at its .alpha.-amino group.
