A process for preparation and/or purification of clavulanic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof comprising the steps of removing solids from a clavulanic acid containing fermentation broth by microfiltration to form a first filtrate, further removing solids from the first filtrage by ultrafiltration to form a second filtrate, concentrating the second filtrate by removal of water, and treating the concentrated second filtrate to isolate clavulanic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof, characterised in that the first filtrate is filtered using an ultrafiltration membrane having a molecular weight cut-off of 10 to 30 kD and a permeate flow rate of 10 to 30 lm-2 h-1.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation et/ou de purification de l'acide clavulanique ou bien d'un sel ou d'un ester pharmaceutiquement acceptable de cet acide, qui comprend les étapes suivantes: extraction des particules solides d'un bouillon de fermentation contenant de l'acide clavulanique par microfiltration, en vue d'obtenir un premier filtrat; extraction des particules solides du premier filtrat par ultrafiltration, en vue d'obtenir un second filtrat; concentration du second filtrat par élimination de l'eau; et traitement du second filtrat concentré, en vue d'isoler l'acide clavulanique ou bien un sel ou un ester pharmaceutiquement acceptable de cet acide. Le procédé est caractérisé par le fait que le premier filtrat est filtré au moyen d'une membrane d'ultrafiltration dont le seuil de rétention oscille entre 10 et 30 k¿D? et dont le débit de perméation est compris entre 10 et 30 lm?-2¿ h?-1¿.
