The isolator (8) is provided for a metal- encapsulated, gas-insulated, high-voltage switching installation. It has two contact supports (38, 39) which are arranged in an enclosure (14) which has a longitudinal axis (21) and is filled with insulating gas, having a separation (48), which is designed as an isolating gap, between mutually opposite surfaces (43, 47) of the two contact supports (38, 39). The isolator (8) is provided with a contact arrangement (30) which moves along an operating axis (27) and electrically conductively shorts the separation (48) when the isolator is in the connected state. It is intended to create an isolator for a metal-encapsulated, gas-insulated, high-voltage switching installation, whose dimensions are comparatively small in the axial direction. This is achieved in that the longitudinal axis (21) and the operating axis (27) form a first angle with one another, and in that the surfaces (43, 47) of the two contact supports (38, 39) run parallel to one another in the region of the isolating gap and are bent through a second angle (B) with respect to the longitudinal axis (21).
