This invention concerns a process to obtain isophorone from acetone; characterized differently when operating (i) in liquid phase in the presence of a magnesium and aluminum double oxide formulated Mgl-x AlxO 1+x, or (ii) in gas or liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst of generic formula (I): ¢Mg2+)1-x (Al3+)x(OH-)x! x- (H2 O)n (I) with 0.20 x 0.33 and n < 1. The advantage of this process is that it can be done in liquid phase, in the presence of a catalyst that has good selectivity and can be largely recycled.
