ABSTRACT A cooling roll is disclosed comprising outer and inner hollow cylindrical members in nested arrangement and supported at each end by a pair of journals, the inner cylindrical member having a plurality of perforations and defining therein an inner chamber, the inner and outer cylindrical members being spaced from one another to define an annular gap, supply means, including a supply line extending through one of the journals, for supplying cooling fluid to the inner chamber so as to pass through the perforations and into the annular gap and exhaust means including an exhaust line extending through one of the journals for withdrawing cooling fluid from the annular gap.
