ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An isotope separation method characterized by controlling the composition of a plurality of diluent gases which are to be solidified on a low temperature retain- ing plate together with a mixture of isotopes to be enriched and separated, and coinciding the wavelength of the absorp- tion line of the intended isotope with the wavelength of an employed infrared laser beam, whereby the intended isotope is selectively excited with high efficiency. An isotope separation apparatus for the above method is provided and includes a gas reservoir for uniformly diluting the isotope mixture with the diluent gases, which confirms the coincidence of the wavelength of the absorption line of the intended isotope with that of the laser beam, enhancing the reliability of the isotope separation.
