Abstract of the Disclosure A 5-methyl-isoxazole-4-carboxylic acid anilide of the general formula Image (I) in which preferably R1 and R2 stand for hydrogen, R3 for halogen atoms, the CF3 group or an alkoxy group of 1 or 2 carbon atoms which may be substituted in part or entirely by halogen atoms; or R1 stands for hydrogen, R2 and R3 for halogen atoms or the CF3 group; or R1 stands for hydrogen, R2 for an alkyl group of 1 or 2 carbon atoms and R3 for a halogen, is prepared by heating an acetoacetic acid anilide with an orthoformic acid ester and a carboxylic acid anhydride, isolating the resulting 2-alkoxy- - 2 - methylene-acetoacetic acid anilide and then treating it with hydroxylamine in an organic solvent. The compounds of the invention have anti-inflammatory and analgetic activity.
